Functional Area:

Organization: Turnaround for Children

Location: New York, NY

Overview:

Turnaround is a pioneering not for profit organization that partners with the most challenged, lowest-performing public schools to transform them into centers of teaching, learning and achievement.  Turnaround’s model powerfully integrates social and behavioral support—not just academic support—directly into the learning environment. We work with school staff to develop the systems, resources, and knowledge and skills to address the broad and intense set of needs presented by students and staff, all in the service of creating a positive school culture and a vibrant learning community dedicated to high achievement and healthy development.  Turnaround works to create a different kind of school, one with the knowledge and skills, systems and resources to provide an integrated response to the adversity in children’s lives so students can benefit from an education that truly prepares them for college, work and life.

In the 2008-09 school year, Turnaround schools outpaced city gains by double digits on statewide standardized tests in Math and Science and many schools have achieved those gains after their first year in the program.  Today, our model is demonstrating powerful results in numerous schools throughout New York City and we are poised for national expansion and greater impact.
