Achievement First is a charter school management organization started in July 2003 by the leaders of Amistad Academy, a high performing charter school in New Haven, CT.  A non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization, Achievement First is creating a network of achievement-gap closing charter schools in Connecticut and New York to bring to scale the dramatic, life changing student achievement results produced at Amistad Academy.  Achievement First currently operates 17 schools in both NY and CT. Over the next decade, Achievement First will grow to support 30 schools serving over 11,500 students. 

The Senior Consultant is part of the Data Strategy Team, whose objectives are to ensure that both the leadership and teachers at Achievement First and its network of schools have the data, analysis, reports, and skill sets needed to support strategic decision-making and to inform instructional planning. The Data Strategy Team accomplishes these objectives by supporting and coordinating high-quality data practices in schools, by creating systems to support data collection and data access, by conducting a rigorous analysis of the data to identify patterns and insights, and by reporting these findings to key constituencies both inside and outside of the organization. Position:

Achievement First is currently seeking a Senior Consultant who can build upon AF’s cutting-edge data strategies in using data to drive instructional improvement in classrooms and expand and codify these practices across the Achievement First network – both instructionally and operationally. AF is seeking candidates who have experience in advising organizational leaders on how to understand, analyze, and act on essential data to drive continuous improvement and higher levels of student outcomes. The Senior Consultant must be able to lead an effective change-management effort across the organization while coordinating with our data systems team to design and build the tools and enterprise systems that will codify, support, and sustain the impact of this work.

The Senior Consultant reports to the Director of Data Strategy and provides critical analysis and consulting across the entire Achievement First organization – from school operations personnel and principals to the Superintendents and co-CEOs.  Working collaboratively with school leaders across the organization, this role provides an exciting opportunity for someone with a deep background in data-driven decision making and strategic advising to improve upon the orientation and use of data within the organization thereby elevating Achievement First to a new level of performance-driven management. This work is a cornerstone to the growth and success of Achievement First. 

Responsibilities:

  • Cultivate, build, and manage strong relationships with and advise school leaders (principals, deans, and directors of school operations) on using data to improve instructional planning and drive student achievement
  • Design and implement a change-management strategy targeted to school leaders (principals and deans) and teachers, related to effective data use, analysis, and planning
  • Support design, implementation, and ongoing use of data dashboards (e.g., key performance indicators) to drive strategic and day-to-day operational decisions at the network and school levels
  • Craft high quality analysis and implications from data that will inform decisions for school leaders, for Team Data, and for other AF Network Support teams
  • Develop and lead data-driven action-planning sessions with regional superintendents every six weeks
  • Map out a data analysis strategy with other network support team leaders (vice-presidents and VPs)
  • Coordinate with Teams Talent, Teaching & Learning, and Leadership Development in designing and providing professional development to school leaders regarding their use and analysis of data

Qualifications:

  • 4+ years experience designing and implementing data-driven decision making and/or organizational performance management systems
  • Experience advising clients and partners in change management, data use and analysis; background in management or strategy consulting
  • Superior analytical skills; demonstrated ability to assess situations, identify trends, develop solutions, and apply insights and findings to the larger context
  • Significant experience developing and delivering effective adult learning training
  • Strong analytical and data visualization capabilities to design reports and analysis tools that would enhance school leaders’ ability to understand and act on data
  • Collaborative team player with demonstrated ability to bring together multiple stakeholders and drive cross-functional projects
  • Entrepreneurial self-starter with the ability to creatively problem solve and look for solutions with a focus on outcomes
  • Belief in the Achievement First mission and educational model
  • Maturity, humility, strong work ethic, sense of humor, and a “roll-up-my-sleeves” attitude
  • Expertise and familiarity working with teachers and schools (e.g. TFA alumni, teacher, instructional leader, management consultant with experience in schools) is preferred
  • Bachelors Degree required, Advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPA, or M.Ed.) preferred
