Manager, YouthTruth Initiative, Center for Effective Philanthropy

Position: Manager, YouthTruth Initiative

Functional Area:

Organization: Center for Effective Philanthropy

Location: San Francisco, CA

Metro Region:

Overview:

The Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) is a nonprofit organization focused on the development of comparative data to enable higher-performing funders. CEP’s mission is to provide data and create insight so philanthropic funders can better define, assess, and improve their effectiveness – and, as a result, their intended impact. This mission is based on a vision of a world in which pressing social needs are more effectively addressed. It stems from a belief that improved effectiveness of philanthropic funders can have a profoundly positive impact on nonprofit organizations and the people and communities they serve.

Developed by CEP with support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, YouthTruth is a national survey project that gathers comparative feedback from the ultimate beneficiaries of education reform efforts—high school students—about what is working and not working in their schools. Through this initiative, CEP shares the comparative perceptions of students back with school leaders, district/network leaders, students, and education funders to enable them to make more informed decisions in pursuit of better long-term outcomes for youth.

Since 2008, CEP has implemented YouthTruth in 164 schools across the country and has surveyed more than 71,000 students. The project is continually expanding as it partners with more funders, districts, and schools to gather feedback that will drive change. CEP is currently seeking an experienced and dynamic Manager to help lead key aspects of its YouthTruth project. With primary responsibility for recruiting schools and managing ongoing relationships with district/network and school participants, the Manager will oversee the collection and analysis of data, the implementation of YouthTruth in participating schools, districts, and networks, and participate in the presentation of key findings and insights for school districts across the country. Additionally, the Manager will help to market the program to new districts/networks, as well as support fundraising efforts. Reporting to the Vice President, YouthTruth Initiative, the Manager will work as part of a bicoastal (San Francisco and Boston) YouthTruth team and collaborate closely with staff in other departments at CEP.

  • Support client engagements by collecting data, pursuing appropriate paths of analysis, and overseeing the production of district/network level reports synthesizing student level perceptions
  • Help design and lead processes for sharing results and fostering exchanges with participating schools and district/networks. Ensure that clients fully understand assessment results, demonstrating patience, empathy, and an appreciation for organizational dynamics and the barriers to change and improvement
  • In collaboration with team members, design processes for collecting school-level data, as well as work to continuously improve processes and monitor project effectiveness
  • Support marketing and fundraising efforts, including initiating outreach to prospective clients, maintaining the YouthTruth website materials, and creating clear and compelling documents summarizing the project, its accomplishments, and future goals
  • Mentor staff and manage one staff member

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of five years of work experience in an education related field, ideally providing consultative services and/or technical assistance to school leaders, education practitioners, or teachers
  • Excellent customer service orientation, with significant experience developing and managing client relationships with responsibility for deliverables and presentations
  • Strong strategic acumen, understanding of organizational dynamics, and ability to navigate political relationships
  • Superior analytical skills, including the ability to review and synthesize key insights from complex quantitative data, identify trends, develop solutions, and translate and apply learnings to the larger context
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint skills, as well as comfort with basic statistical analyses (e.g. T-Tests, ANOVAs, simple regressions)
  • Personal commitment to CEP’s mission and belief in the role that data can play in improving philanthropy and education
  • Interest in working as part of a small start-up team in a highly entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment that requires individuals to “roll up their sleeves”
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree in Education, Public Policy, Business or similar field strongly preferred
