Position: Organizational Development Consultant

Functional Area:

Organization: Talent Initiative

Location: New York, NY

Metro Region:

Overview:

Talent Initiative is a nonprofit organization dedicated to enhancing the social sector’s perception and practice of human capital management.  In pursuit of this mission, Talent Initiative provides capacity-building services to innovative nonprofits in order to help them become more efficient, effective, scalable and sustainable and leads human capital thought leadership across the sector.  At the core of these efforts is the belief that improving human capital management is essential in order for nonprofits to achieve their potential for social impact.

The launch of Talent Initiative in early 2010 coincides with a tremendous opportunity for high-impact nonprofits across the country, as a wide range of private and public funders have recently targeted their support toward innovative and results-oriented nonprofits.  Talent Initiative was created to help nonprofits develop their capacity for human capital management so that they will ultimately be better positioned to seize these opportunities for increasing program scale, results and impact.

The Talent Initiative program model, which will be launched in the summer of 2010 with an inaugural cohort of 6-12 high-impact nonprofits, is a six-month, cohort-based, organizational fellowship.  Using an individualized and hands-on approach with each client, the program will: (1) Establish an organization-wide philosophy about the role of human capital management in pursuing its mission; (2) Evaluate all aspects of human capital management against the organization’s strategic plan in order to identify upcoming challenges and areas in need of improvement; (3) Develop a strategic human capital plan for addressing high-priority needs and leveraging world-class management practices; (4) Build the internal capacity to implement the human capital plan over the next several years by lining up the necessary staff, systems, technologies, partners, and resources; and (5) Position the organization to advance to the next level and become a nationally recognized center of best practices in talent recruitment, management and development.

Position:

Talent Initiative is currently seeking highly motivated, entrepreneurial leaders with consulting and/or executive level nonprofit experience to serve as Organizational Development Consultants to launch a national program with the potential to transform the nonprofit sector.  Reporting to the President, Consultants will serve as strategic advisors and executive coaches to a small portfolio of nonprofit organizations that have been selected to participate in Talent Initiative’s inaugural cohort.  In this role, Consultants will lead senior management through the three phases of the program model: (1) organizational assessment; (2) strategic human capital planning; and (3) internal capacity development.  This is an exciting opportunity for Consultants to play a vital role in shaping innovative, outcome-driven, and dynamic organizations focused on achieving lasting social change.

Responsibilities:

• Deliver the Talent Initiative program to a small portfolio of client organizations to ensure the highest levels of client satisfaction
• Cultivate, build, and manage strong client relationships based on trust, communication and a commitment to service excellence

• Ensure that leadership teams develop and utilize growth management skills necessary to implement human capital plan; coach executives, support a strong working relationship between the chief executive and the board, and participate in senior leadership and board-level implementation activities, including successful creation and stewardship of a “talent” subcommittee of the board
• Help lead continuous learning efforts at Talent Initiative by contributing to program development and refinement, organizational evaluation, and reflection during the pilot phase and beyond
• Provide and model inspirational and strategic leadership, deliberate and transparent communication, compassion, and professionalism with clients and within Talent Initiative

Qualifications:

• At least 10 years of professional work experience in consulting and/or senior leadership roles at quickly-growing, entrepreneurial organizations; experience working with nonprofit organizations highly preferred
• Experience developing and managing high-level client relationships with responsibility for deliverables and presentations; able to earn and maintain the respect and trust of senior leaders as a peer, confidant, and advisor
• A successful track record in managing, coaching, and motivating effective teams and leading successful collaborations across various stakeholder groups
• Excellent strategic thinking skills, with the ability to operationalize concepts and transform ideas into action
• Knowledge and expertise in human capital strategy and implementation; experience formulating and using key performance and organizational goals to mobilize and motivate staff
• Experience with organizational or departmental budgets and demonstrated exposure to the financial oversight function
• Excellent writing and communication skills and an ability to share difficult information in a productive way
• Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously with little supervision or management
• Ability to work independently on client engagements while participating actively and collaboratively on the Talent Initiative team
• Demonstrated commitment to the mission of Talent Initiative and excited by the opportunity to participate in the start-up phase of an organization poised to significantly affect the impact of the social sector

Logistics:
