Health Care Without Harm (HCWH) and Practice Greenhealth (PGH) are committed to transforming the health care sector so that it is ecologically sustainable and no longer a source of harm to the public’s health and the environment. To that end, they are working to implement ecologically sound and healthy alternatives to health care practices that pollute the environment and contribute to disease. HCWH and PGH share complementary missions as well as a Board of Directors but operate as two distinct nonprofit organizations.
Health Care Without Harm is an international coalition of hospitals and health care systems, medical professionals, community groups, health-affected constituencies, labor unions, environmental and environmental health organizations and religious groups that advocates globally to eliminate healthcare practices that harm people and the environment.
Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices. Members include hospitals, healthcare systems, businesses and other stakeholders engaged in the greening of healthcare to improve the health of patients, staff and the environment.
Position:
Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth are seeking a dynamic and experienced leader to serve as their first Director of Marketing and Communications and oversee all aspects of their marketing and communication work. Working closely with the senior leadership team, the Director will have primary responsibility for developing and executing a joint strategic marketing and communications plan that will build individual but complementary brands and support the growth of and enhance the visibility of both organizations nationally. With the opportunity to build and lead a team, the Director will oversee all branding initiatives, the development of appropriate and compelling collateral materials designed to meet the business and membership goals of the organizations and the execution of effective public relations campaigns.
Responsibilities:
- Create overall strategic marketing, communications and branding plans for both organizations as well as specific programs, products and events, incorporating the more business-related goals of Practice Greenhealth and the more advocacy related goals of Health Care Without Harm.
- Develop and oversee all marketing, communications, branding and PR activities for the organizations including individual but complementary brands for Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth that support the organizations varied missions and audiences
- Conceptualize, design and implement all aspects of PGH’s membership acquisition and retention efforts and campaigns. This includes developing a detailed plan, creating promotional materials, targeting specific audiences and tracking the outcome of the various efforts.
- Build and lead a team of both internal and external resources and work collaboratively with existing HCWH/PGH staff to execute the marketing and communications plans
- Design and execute a strategic media relations plan targeting general media, consumer publications and social media to powerfully communication the vision and mission of the organizations.
- Oversee the design and execution of updated graphics, art and visual content for HCWH/PGH materials
- Supervise the editing, production and publication of all newsletters, magazines and other public documents
- Manage the websites for both organizations and ensure that they promote current and accurate information.
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with all outside partners associated with marketing, communications, and PR activities, including graphic designers, photographers, media and others
- Serve as primary liaison with all external media contacts
- Manage the marketing and communications budget and track expenditures, ensuring the most effective use of resources
Qualifications:
- At least 7 years of experience in the marketing and communications field; experience in a membership or advocacy organization a plus
- Demonstrated success developing and managing strategic marketing plans, including expertise in content creation, public relations, and social media.
- Significant brand development and management experience
- Experience marketing and promoting a membership organization or revenue-generating programs for a nonprofit setting
- Excellent written communication skills, including the ability to ascertain the priorities of internal and external audiences and craft persuasive communication given those priorities.
- Experience developing and maintaining relationships both internally and externally (e.g. nonprofit partners, vendors, media contacts)
- Significant brand development and management experience
- Flexible, adaptable and goal-oriented with a commitment to high standards of excellence.
- Demonstrated success in an entrepreneurial environment, with the ability to think strategically while executing tactically
- Creative, with the ability to identify effective and visually strong aesthetics
- Strong organizational skills with exceptional attention to detail combined with an ability to take initiative and manage multiple projects simultaneously
- Commitment to the missions of Health Care Without Harm and Practice Greenhealth
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.
