Founded in 1999, iMentor has quickly become one of the largest and most innovative mentoring organizations in New York City.  Over the last nine years, iMentor has developed and refined a technology-enriched mentoring model, combining email communication and in-person meetings. As a result, iMentor can significantly boost the number of skilled professionals willing and able to mentor disadvantaged youth and bring mentoring to historically underserved communities.  Through its national program, iMentor Interactive, iMentor is proving a new model of nationwide replication, providing non-profits and schools across the country with iMentor’s mentoring tools and resources—it’s a “teach to fish” technical assistance model that empowers partner organizations to run their own high-impact mentoring programs.

iMentor is in the middle of an ambitious five year growth plan, which includes national expansion through iMentor Interactive, as well as growing the core mentoring program in New York City. By 2013, iMentor will reach 3,000 mentee-mentor pairs in New York City and more than 50,000 users across the country.

Position:

iMentor is currently seeking an experienced fundraising professional to serve as its first Director of Individual Giving and grow individual income into a significant and sustainable source of revenue. The Director of Individual Giving will take on the challenge of more than doubling iMentor’s individual donor base in 2010-11 and continuing to increase individual donors’ contributions in future years. The long-term goal is to make individual income one of the largest areas of fundraising for iMentor. Reporting to the Managing Director of Development, the Director of Individual Giving will be responsible for identifying, cultivating, and soliciting mid-level donors; assisting the CEO and Managing Director of Development with major gifts; creating and implementing strategies to engage mentors in giving opportunities; and supporting the planning and execution of a major annual event. Additionally, the Director of Individual Giving will oversee a Development Manager. The ideal candidate will have exemplary relationship building skills, the ability to listen and create a tailored pitch, and be excited by the responsibility of being accountable for significantly increasing individual contributions to iMentor.

Responsibilities:

  • Create and implement a comprehensive plan to attract new individual donors, as well as increase current donors’ support for and involvement with iMentor.
  • Initiate and manage relationships with mid-tier donors, including making the ask.
  • Support the CEO and Managing Director of Development with major donors, including managing donor pipelines and solicitation and stewardship schedules.
  • Implement strategies that increase the number of mentors who donate to iMentor, leveraging best practices in converting volunteers to financial supporters.
  • Create compelling materials for solicitations including customized correspondence to convey iMentor’s mission and impact; consult on organizational-wide communications collateral.
  • Oversee events strategy and execution, including an annual fundraising event initiative; collaborate with the Volunteer Department, Young Executive Board, and others to leverage events to cultivate prospective donors and volunteers.
  • Supervise a Development Manager to create and execute events, implement online fundraising tools/campaigns, and manage gift reporting and acknowledgement.
  • Support other organization-wide and development department initiatives.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 5 years of work experience, with at least 3 years of experience raising funds from individuals.
  • Confident communicator who is able to engage people and get them to commit to funding. iMentor; comfortable making “the ask” and supporting others to do so.
  • Skilled in all aspects of strategy, planning and project management. Able to take an idea from concept to completion.
  • Exceptional attention to detail and the ability to effectively track and manage 100+ relationships at once.
  • Strong and compelling writer with an eye towards messaging and marketing.
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced, startup-like environment with aggressive growth plans; flexible and adaptive to changing priorities.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to relationship management and collaboration.
  • Superb leadership skills, able to manage own performance as well as team members’ and colleagues’.
  • Candidates must be inspired by the field of mentoring and have a passion to level the playing field for young people growing up in underserved communities.
  • Bachelors degree or equivalent; advanced degree preferred.
