The mission of The Trustees of Reservations (TTOR) is to preserve, for public use and enjoyment, properties of exceptional scenic, historic, and ecological value in Massachusetts. The organization cares for over 100 properties that comprise more than 24,000 acres and monitor 285 Conservation Restrictions protecting another 16,700 acres.  In 1891, the Trustees of Reservations was founded by a small band of visionary volunteers.  Over the past ten years, the organization has evolved into a dynamic $20M operation with 180 year-round employees who are led by a volunteer governance structure and supported by over 45,000 member households.  A recent strategic planning process strengthened the core organizational goals and set an ambitious plan in motion to increase the organization’s impact and visibility through 2017.

Position:

The Trustees of Reservations is seeking a dynamic and seasoned Director of Finance to oversee their finance department, while building and managing the financial systems and processes needed to support a growing, entrepreneurial organization.  Reporting to the Vice President of Finance & Administration, managing three accounting staff and working closely with the senior leadership team, the Director of Finance will lead the organization’s annual budgeting process ensuring alignment with strategic priorities and goals, prepare timely and accurate financial reports, coordinate and oversee organizational audits and preparation of Federal and state filings, and manage the ongoing compliance and reporting on grants and other restricted funds. This is a highly visible position with growth potential that requires strong accounting, financial management and analytical skills, along with exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a system of financial policies and procedures to ensure compliance with GAAP reporting, IRS and other regulatory requirements
  • Develop, monitor and continually refine the systems of internal controls
  • Prepare quarterly and annual GAAP financial statements for TTOR and affiliated entities
  •  

  • Work closely with Advancement and program staff on grant management; including development of budgets and applications; on-going administration, compliance and reporting requirements; and grant-specific audits
  • Maintain systems for tracking and reporting on donor restricted and endowment funds to monitor compliance with donors intent and organizational policies
  • Develop and manage the annual operating and capital budget process ensuring alignment with organizational goals and priorities
  • Supervise three accounting staff including the Controller, Accounting Administrator and Staff Accountant
  • Monitor and analyze revenues, expenses and cash flow against budget for updating seasonal forecasts
  • Train and support program staff on the use of budgets and monthly cash flow reports
  • Oversee the annual audit preparations and process
  • Prepare the information needed for preparation of Federal and state tax filings
  • Assist the CFO with financial analysis and presentations in supporting the Finance, Audit, Investment and Business Development Committees
  • Manage external vendors including banking and insurance relationships

  • Qualifications:

  • At least 5 years of work experience in the field of finance and accounting; knowledge of nonprofit accounting required
  • Experience utilizing financial management software; knowledge of Blackbaud Financial and/or Raiser’s Edge preferred
  • Knowledge of nonprofit and for-profit Federal and state tax issues and filings
  • Grants-management experience; federal grants management experience preferred
  • Superior detail orientation and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage multiple, detailed projects and drive toward deadlines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Self-starter capable of taking initiative and anticipating needs
  • High level of interpersonal maturity, poise, and professionalism
  • Unwavering commitment to service and customer orientation
  • Command of Microsoft Office programs, specifically EXCEL and PowerPoint
  • Demonstrated interest in the mission, vision and values of TTOR
  • Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree in Business Administration or CPA certification preferred
