The District of Columbia Primary Care Association (DCPCA) works to improve the health of DC residents by ensuring that they receive high-quality primary health care regardless of their ability to pay. Founded in 1996 by committed health care professionals concerned that the shortage of primary care was contributing to some of the nation’s lowest health outcomes for the most vulnerable populations, DCPCA facilitates the development and sustainability of an effective integrated health care system in the District of Columbia that guarantees access to primary health care and eliminates disparities in health outcomes. Today, with a growing staff of 25, DCPCA is a leader in health care financing, public policy, and political organizing and is currently in the middle of a $145 million, multi-year project to rebuild the primary care system to ensure that D.C. residents receive comprehensive, high-quality care, regardless of their ability to pay. Position:
DCPCA is currently seeking an ambitious and creative Director of Development and Communications to lead fundraising for this entrepreneurial, growth-oriented organization. As a member of the senior management team, the Director of Development and Communications will capitalize on DCPCA’s strong position in the DC political and charitable giving marketplace. The Director will build on DCPCA’s success in cultivating foundation, District and federal government funders, while expanding local and national awareness of DCPCA’s work and strengthening financial resources to sustain the rapid growth of the organization. Reporting to the Chief of Finance and Administration, the Director of Development and Communications will leverage his or her marketing, fundraising, and organizational skills to benefit DCPCA’s visibility and impact in the health care community.
Responsibilities:
Development:
• Thoroughly understand DCPCA, including its mission, policies, culture, values, history, key stakeholders, programs, finances, and how its multiple constituencies and sources of funding can be integrated to generate revenue and increase visibility
• Develop and build a strong, diversified fundraising program by expanding DCPCA’s donor base, researching and identifying new prospects among foundations, pursuing corporate funding, and building a base of individual donors as appropriate
• Oversee all grant writing initiatives and ensure the highest quality standards for the preparation of proposals and all solicitation materials
• Develop and implement membership, direct mail, events, and other fundraising ventures, ensuring that all annual fundraising goals are met and overseeing support to maximize efficiency, maintain fundraising schedules, and streamline internal systems when appropriate
• Stay abreast of philanthropic, economic, social, and community trends related to DCPCA; ensure that staff and Board Members are informed of changes in trends and initiatives that might impact the organization
• Ensure coordination of development activities and messages with DCPCA’s strategic communications platform
Communications:
• Manage the development and implementation of a comprehensive, targeted, integrated, and sustainable communications plan that supports DCPCA’s mission and promotes the success of DCPCA’s initiatives
• Provide direction and oversight for all external communications and maintain the organizational brand platform and identity and ensure its consistent application across all media, including electronic newsletters, news releases, brochures, annual reports, special event materials, and Web site content
• Oversee the development and maintenance of a new multifunctional Web site and manage, direct, and support integrated, ongoing online campaigns to expand awareness and engage stakeholders, which may include a combination of SEO, SEM, and social media marketing initiatives
• Develop and manage relationships with local and community-based media, health care trade publications, national press, and social media outlets, including online publications and Web logs
• Manage Senior Communications Specialist, Development and Communications Specialist, and Grant Writer through coaching, mentoring and training to foster their development and ensure that DCPCA’s work is of consistently high quality
Qualifications:
• At least 7 years of senior-level development and communications experience and demonstrated success working within the DC political and charitable marketplace, including developing and managing relationships to cultivate and secure foundation, District and federal government grants
• Experience growing the individual donor base of an organization and experience in soliciting gifts from a national constituency base
• Demonstrated ability to conceptualize and describe funding needs in a way that is compelling and comprehensive to potential donors
• Demonstrated success in managing brand messaging and leading communications initiatives to enhance an organization’s image in the community and in the media
• Experience managing staff and the ability to facilitate collaboration and achieve results between multiple programs or projects
• Commitment to the mission of DCPCA and an understanding of the complexities of an association environment
• Bachelor’s degree in English, marketing communications, public relations, or equivalent experience
