Since our launch in 1999, we have provided more than $150 million in credit to 254 grassroots enterprises in 30 countries, maintaining a 99% repayment rate from our borrowers and a 100% repayment rate to our investors. Position:

Root Capital is seeking a dynamic and seasoned Director of Finance and Administration to lead the finance, human resource and administration functions of the organization while building the underlying infrastructure needed to support the quickly growing, multifaceted organization with offices in Cambridge, MA and throughout Latin America and Africa.  More than 60% of the Director’s time will focus on finance including the immediate responsibility of leading efforts to implement sophisticated financial software that will support complex business processes such as multi-currency lending.  In human resources, the Director of Finance and Administration will be responsible for helping to ensure that Root Capital is a great place to work and for providing strategic leadership in the areas of recruiting, employee relations, HR systems, and benefits. This is a highly visible position with huge growth potential that requires strong accounting, financial management and analytical skills, along with exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with a variety of constituents.

Responsibilities:

Finance

  • Oversee all financial functions: accounting, budgeting, reporting, and cash management
  • Guide staff in producing strong monthly financial statements and quarterly financial reports
  • Lead implementation of new business processes and financial software in several related areas: multiple sets of books for loan funds and field offices, multiple currency lending, time-keeping and cost allocation, and more automated budgeting and reporting
  • Establish and execute meaningful financial policies and procedures, controls and systems
  • Oversee the successful completion of the annual financial audit, A-133 audit, and 990
  • In close coordination with colleagues, implement business processes to enable effective project management of multiple restricted grants. Design financial component of processes for proposal development and project management

Strategic Human Resources

  • Co-lead, with the Director of Organizational Planning & Development, the human resources team in planning, strategy and role definition
  • Ensure human resources team has appropriate recruiting systems and tools in place to support supervisors in the hiring of executive, program, field, and support staff
  • Manage human resources team and systems including payroll and benefits administration in all offices, and ensure competitive employment packages are in place
  • Respond to ongoing issues as needed including all aspects of employee relations
  • Within human resources, lead effort to support increasing regionalization by developing systems that provide full support to field offices and enable seamless collaboration
  • Identify and promote applicable best practices and entrepreneurial management techniques to encourage professional growth of all staff

Administration

  • Develop and manage space planning and expansion for Cambridge headquarters
  • Provide support as needed to regional offices regarding office systems and inter-office communication
  • Support Director of Information Technology and Global Systems as needed
  • Support the establishment of general office policies and procedures, including organizational insurance coverage and other critical items

Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of financial management experience, ideally in an international nonprofit organization with a minimum of 5 years of demonstrated leadership in a similar role
  • Advanced accounting and finance skills essential; experience implementing and utilizing sophisticated financial software systems preferred
  • Familiarity with the area of human resources through experience overseeing or working closely with a human resources team
  • Strong team player with a proactive, service-oriented attitude and a healthy sense of humor
  • Demonstrated ability to work and thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong creative, analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Spanish, Portuguese or French fluency a plus

• Experience with multilateral NGOs a plus
