Founded in 1993, this leading education reform organization is a service organization that enables public schools in high-poverty Bay Area communities—serving primarily students of color and English-language learners—to achieve educational equity through school-based reform. The organization believes that the single strongest lever for increasing student achievement is to improve the quality of teaching in schools. Consequently, the organization’s approach focuses on three essential elements of reform that it believes will dramatically improve the conditions in schools that contribute to improved teacher practice, and as a result, higher student achievement. These elements are: literacy, leadership and teacher professional development.
Position:
The organization is currently seeking an experienced and results-oriented Director of Development to design and execute a comprehensive and sustainable development program for this high-performing and growth-oriented organization. Reporting directly to and working closely with the Chief Executive Officer, the Director of Development will design and drive fund development efforts to meet annual operating revenue goals from a variety of sources including major gifts, foundations, and corporations. This position is an exciting opportunity for an ambitious, strategic development professional to help take a highly effective education reform organization to a new level and, in the process, make a significant contribution to lasting social change.
Responsibilities:
- Implement and manage an effective fundraising and communications program that will guide the organization to meet fundraising goals that support significant growth and long-term sustainability
- Initiate, cultivate and steward relationships with individual, foundation and corporate support. In collaboration with the CEO and members of the Board, develop a portfolio of major gift donors in order to significantly increase revenue from individuals
- Lead all activities related to ongoing fundraising efforts including implementation of a donor relations and stewardship program and oversight of fund raising events, gift processing, record keeping and reporting
- Partner with the CEO to manage his involvement in cultivating, soliciting and stewarding donors.
- Lead the preparation of high-quality grants, sponsorship proposals, annual reports and other external facing communications to drive revenue
- Manage key fundraising deliverables and performance measures, monitor results and provide CEO and Board members with regular status updates.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of demonstrated success building and leading the development function in an entrepreneurial, high-performing nonprofit organization
- Proven record of successful management of a portfolio of major donors, foundation and corporate partners and knowledge of the philanthropic community in the education space
- Demonstrated experience designing and implementing fundraising plans for all funding streams including major gifts, corporate and foundation giving, with a track record of significantly growing revenues over time
- Understanding of the education landscape, and a genuine interest in the mission, vision and strategic direction of this leading education reform organization
- Excellent relationship building and interpersonal skills combined with an ability to be extremely agile and build rapport with internal and external stakeholders
- Exceptional communication skills; articulate, with proven ability to write effectively and speak persuasively
- Superior organizational skills, with a strong sense of detail-orientation
- Capability to think strategically while executing tactically within in a lean and resource-constrained environment
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
