Overview:

UNCF (United Negro College Fund) is the nation’s largest and most effective minority education organization. UNCF provides operating funds for 38 member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), scholarships and internships for students at about 900 institutions and faculty and administrative professional training.

For more than 67 years, UNCF has raised more than $3.3 billion to help more than 400,000 students attend college and graduate from college. UNCF has distributed more funds to help minorities attend school than any entity outside of the U.S. government.  Currently, UNCF operates 400 scholarship programs, including the UNCF Gates Millennium Scholars Program, a 20-year, $1.6 billion program whose 14,000 low-income minority recipients have a 90 percent college graduation rate. The UNCF Institute for Capacity Building is another major program which helps UNCF’s 39 member historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) become stronger, more effective and more self-sustaining in such critical areas as fund-raising and building strong academic programs that prepare their students for careers in the global economy.  Currently located in Fairfax, Virginia, the organization is moving to Washington, DC in the fall of 2012. 

Position:

UNCF is seeking a dynamic and results oriented Chief of Staff to provide high level support to the President and CEO of UNCF as the organization continues in an exciting phase of reinvention.  Serving as a trusted advisor and resource, the Chief of Staff will be an important link in the communication between the President/CEO and both internal staff and external constituents and will help direct attention and resources to priority matters to ensure effective leverage of the President/CEO. Reporting directly to the President/CEO with a dotted line reporting relationship to the Vice President of Finance and Administration, the Chief of Staff will work cross-functionally and serves as a key oversight resource, ensuring that critical projects are completed in a timely and efficient manner and the ultimate results are communicated out to the appropriate stakeholders.  This is a unique opportunity to work across all initiatives of the United Negro College Fund and to contribute to increasing the organization’s impact on the field of educational access.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the President/CEO and leadership team to develop, execute and report on the organization’s strategic plan
  • Track priorities for the President/CEO to ensure time and attention is focused most effectively
  • Attend meetings pertinent to the President/CEO’s priorities and work streams and communicate decisions and action items to appropriate staff
  • Oversee the launch of critical programmatic efforts and work directly with program teams to ensure successful implementation
  • Manage CEO and staff involvement in critical organizational projects.  Design and implement interactive processes that are both top-down and bottom-up, and include UNCF’s board of directors in appropriate ways.

  • Anticipate and respond to the President/CEO’s needs relative to upcoming meetings and events; coordinate and manage appropriate resources Coordinate and take responsibility for strategic presentations to senior management and external constituents by working cross-functionally to determine appropriate content, message and presentation.

  • Manage a diverse set of highly visible projects related to initiatives of the President/CEO’s Office, initiates and directs the office staff in the research and preparation of special projects

Qualifications:

  • A strong commitment to UNCF’s mission and 10+ years of experience in the fields of management consulting, project management or strategy with a focus on organizational effectiveness
  • Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, client management and/or product development
  • Ability to work cross-functionally and establish and manage a collaborative team environment
  • Excellent project planning and management skills with an inclusive approach to team facilitation
  • Strong analytical and business planning skills
  • Excellent communication skills and a strong commitment to transparency
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s in Business Administration highly preferred
