Can Do Multiple Sclerosis is leading the way in supporting people with MS and their support partners by providing comprehensive programs that empower them to transform and improve their quality of life.  Leveraging the powerful legacy and principles of former Olympic medalist and organizational founder Jimmie Heuga, for over twenty years Can Do MS has helped thousands of people living with MS reclaim a sense of dignity, control and freedom by supporting them with the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to transform challenges into possibilities.

With an interdisciplinary team of MS experts, Can Do MS’s lifestyle empowerment programs teach participants how to take control of as many aspects of their lives and their health as possible by focusing on what they can do. Through a unique combination of personalized, engaging, and experiential learning and realistic goal-setting, participants gain the knowledge, skills, tools and confidence to live their best lives with multiple sclerosis. From learning how to make smarter lifestyle choices that enhance well-being to understanding how to manage individualized symptoms, reconnect with themselves, their loved ones and life passions, our programs go beyond traditional health and wellness programs by exploring all aspects of living with MS and empowering participants with a whole new way of thinking about and living with MS. Position:

Can Do MS is seeking a visionary and dynamic Chief Executive Officer to lead this highly-regarded and high-potential organization to grow to the next level in its reach and impact.  Reporting to the Chair of the Board, the Chief Executive Officer will develop an overarching vision and plan for the organization, and will direct all operations to ensure that Can Do MS reaches its potential for expanding its impact over the short- and long-term.  Specifically, the Chief Executive Officer will oversee all departments and programs, build strategic relationships with current and potential funders and partner organizations, and will act as an organizational ambassador to raise the visibility and profile of the critical services Can Do MS provides to individuals and families living with MS.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute a strategic vision and plan for the organization, including multi-year and single-year strategic plans
  • Increase strategic relationships with both current and potential funders and partners that grow the organization and enable increased organizational reach and impact
  • Provide overall leadership of the organization, including overseeing all departments and staff, and the development of all programs and services
  • Participate in external activities as an organizational spokesperson and advocate for the enhancement of visibility and reputation of the organization, including participating and speaking at industry events, in membership organizations and advisory groups, and with business and community leaders
  • In partnership with the Director of Finance and Accounting, establish and maintain operational budgets that maintain fiscal stability, establish financial capacity and ensure compliance with best practices and relevant regulations
  • Working closely with the Board of Directors, ensure that the Board and staff fulfill governance functions, implements general policies, complies with articles and bylaws, and meets ethical standards for nonprofit management

Qualifications:

  • At least five years of management-level experience overseeing staff, budgets and programs
  • Significant fundraising experience, including cultivating relationships with key donors and expanding the donor base.
  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of Can Do MS; ability to create a dynamic vision to increase the organization’s reach and impact.
  • Direct experience with, or a strong desire to learn the details of the medical world of MS; ability to speak with authority on the subject with partner organizations and other professionals in the pharmaceutical industry.
  • Strong financial management experience and the ability to develop and oversee budgets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, outstanding organizational skills and the ability to work with people from varied backgrounds
  • Experience in or strong understanding of non-profit organizations, and growth-oriented organizations or companies; flexibility and the ability to work as a team player in a dynamic environment.
  • Passion for and commitment to the mission of Can Do MS, and to creating a dynamic vision to increase the organization’s reach and impact.
  • Bachelors Degree required, with advanced degree (MS/MBA/PhD) in Business Management, Health Care, Pharmaceutical, Life Science Industry, or related fields strongly preferred.
