Campaign Director, MoveOn.org

Position: Campaign Director

Functional Area:

Organization: MoveOn.org

Location: Flexible

Metro Region:

Overview:

With 5 million members, MoveOn.org Political Action is uniquely situated to organize for real progressive change. In the last few years we’ve racked up some significant victories, but there are many more to come. So we’ll be launching several major campaigns in 2011 around issues like fighting for progressive solutions on the economy, ending corporate influence in Washington, creating a clean energy future, and more. And we’ll be innovating on how we do our work, striking out into uncharted territory with new organizing models, technologies, experiments, and partnerships. We’re hiring a new Campaign Director to help make it all happen.

Position:

As a Campaign Director, you will be responsible for one or more of our big national campaigns. This includes coordinating with allies in the progressive community, designing the strategy and tactics, and then implementing all aspects of the campaign – from shaking hands with Senators to testing subject lines. You will be adept and creative at organizing and mobilizing folks to make a difference. You’ll need to be able to turn on a dime, so when there’s a new idea on Monday afternoon, you can test, evaluate and implement it Tuesday before noon. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll need a track record of starting or running big, bold things – things that prove you’ve got the entrepreneurial spirit to help take MoveOn to the next level.

Responsibilities:

To set our Campaign Director up for success, we have identified three critical skill-sets necessary to excel in this role – roughly grouped into Communications, Technology and Scalable Organizing skills. Strong candidates will be skilled in all three areas. But we also encourage candidates to apply who don’t have deep expertise in all three areas, but have exceptional skills in one or two areas, and the hunger and aptitude to learn the other areas quickly.

Qualifications:

Communications

  • Powerful writer for popular audiences, especially short and grabby email actions
  • Knows what campaigns will attract press coverage, and can make sure they do
  • Able to quickly synthesize information about new topics
  • Thrives on the constant adrenaline of the 24-hour news cycle

Technology

  • Adept at figuring out creative ways of leveraging technology to make good things happen
  • Skilled at testing new uses of technology, and knows how to measure what’s working
  • Has managed tech projects, including scoping and spec’ing out web tools
  • Proficient in Word, Gmail, and advanced Excel
  • Experienced with HTML, and ideally with CSS, SQL, Perl or similar technologies

Scalable Organizing

  • Constantly thinking of creative new ways to mobilize members and have an impact
  • Understands and connects with grassroots activists and trusts members to do good, creative work
  • Can integrate online communications and organizing with offline organizing
  • Skilled at combining various tactics and managing the tempo of a campaign to keep the momentum building
  • Social media organizing experience is strongly preferred
  • Experience directing advocacy campaigns is preferred
  • Ability to manage staff and large numbers of volunteers

Work Environment

  • Likes teamwork, but can work independently day-to-day
  • Can plan and manage complex projects under relentless deadlines
  • Is low-ego and high-output (like the rest of our team)
  • Can change directions quickly and frequently. “Build it, test it, iterate quickly.”
  • Likes working hard with a hard-working team
  • Thrives in a virtual office: communicates well on conference calls, IM and email

To Apply:

Please upload a resume and thoughtful cover letter, outlining how your skills and experience meet the qualifications of the position and stating how you heard about this opportunity, both in Word format, to Tate Hausman at http://jobs.cgcareers.org/application.aspx?id=1747 with the subject line “Campaign Director.” Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
