Founded in 2009, Green City Force (GCF) is a highly successful and quickly growing organization that engages urban youth to fight climate change and improve community environmental health while preparing them for careers in the clean energy economy. GCF corps members are young people aged 18-24 who serve full-time for 6-9 months, during which they perform green service activities while learning marketable job skills. GCF’s goal is to create a city-wide corps with a major presence in all 5 boroughs that is a force for building a sustainable future. Based on the vision of a Clean Energy Corps developed by a national coalition of advocates for an inclusive green economy, Green City Force works in close partnership with Community Environmental Center, Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation, NYC Service and the NYC Department of Buildings and will become a national model for similar corps. Position:
GCF is currently seeking a talented and experienced Program Director to develop and oversee the field operations of GCF’s Cool Roofs and Energy Corps programs, both geared at improving energy efficiency in low-income homes and not-for-profit buildings. While leading the day-to-day operations of the programs, the Program Director will hire, train, and manage staff, develop systems and processes, and contribute to organizational planning and strategy development. In addition, s/he is responsible for overseeing staff and policy development for corps member recruitment, life skills and personal development curricula, service, training, supportive services, and related partnerships. Ultimately, the Program Director sets the tone and drives the development of a strong culture in the corps while building and expanding all aspects of the organization’s programmatic activity. A newly created position, the Program Director will work closely with and report to the Executive Director as a key member of a small and growing team.
Responsibilities:
Program Leadership:
• Oversee service program design, logistics, partnerships, evaluation, and reporting related to service activities, including Cool Roofs and Energy Corps programs
• Assist with hiring of all field-related staff; oversee field staff, providing coaching and mentoring as appropriate to enhance performance
• Build key partnerships with city and community-based partners
• Participate in organizational growth and program development
Corps Member Support and Training:
• Design and execute a strategy for corps member recruitment
• Manage the corps, including enforcing attendance and behavior policies; improve, develop and implement corps-related policies and procedures
• Set the tone and build a strong and positive culture among the corps and staff
• Improve and develop corps member support services to promote retention and success
• Oversee support services and job development staff, and create network of partner organizations to serve range of corps member needs
• Collaborate with partners to design and implement corps member job readiness and technical training; ensure effectiveness and alignment of training with organizational goals and corps member needs
Qualifications:
• Passion for Green City Force’s mission; commitment to social justice and youth development; interest in sustainability and green initiatives preferred
• At least 5 years of experience in youth development, national service, and/or workforce development fields; construction or military background, and experience with green building, weatherization, solar, and/or community organizing a plus
• At least 3 years of direct experience working with disadvantaged youth, in particular formerly incarcerated or court-involved youth or those aging out of foster care
• Proven ability to supervise, mentor and lead by example to inspire top performance and model healthy and sustainable choices
• Demonstrated experience building and managing youth programs with positive outcomes for participants
• An innovative thinker with strong initiative and demonstrated flexibility, able to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced, evolving environment
• Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to solve problems, mediate conflicts and exercise sound judgment
• Demonstrated ability to create and sustain effective collaborations and partnerships
• Excellent communication skills—oral, written, and public speaking
• Knowledge of New York City neighborhoods and communities a plus
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent professional and life experience required; Master’s degree preferred
