Founded in 1996, the Massachusetts Institute for a New Commonwealth – known as MassINC – is an independent, nonpartisan research and educational institute. MassINC brings together diverse perspectives, including those held by conservatives and liberals, business and labor, advocates and policy makers, to focus on the challenge of achieving the American Dream in Massachusetts. To pursue our goals, we use independent research, a wide range of public events, and a unique approach to journalism. MassINC is a new kind of think tank, one that combines the intellectual rigor of academic research with the timeliness and energy needed to get our ideas into the public debate. 

Position:

MassINC is currently seeking a skilled and experienced Manager, Foundation Relations to drive all grant-related activities to support MassINC’s organizational growth and development. Reporting directly to the Director of Development, the Manager, Foundation Relations will be responsible for researching and identifying new sources for grant revenue and will develop and write compelling grant proposals to existing and prospective private and corporate foundation funders. Working collaboratively with the Director of Development, Director of Research, Executive Vice President and other MassINC’s staff, the Manager, Foundation Relations will develop and implement grant-related strategies to reach aggressive fundraising goals and will put into place systems for accurate, clear and timely reporting to funders.

Responsibilities:

• Lead MassINC’s grant-related strategies from inception to completion
• Conceptualize, plan, write, edit, steward and report on grant proposals to achieve budget goals
• Research and identify new sources of private and corporate foundation funding compatible with the organization’s programs
• Establish and implement systems to ensure an effective grant-writing process, including tracking grant application statuses, creating and managing a grants and reporting calendar, and developing high-quality proposal templates
• Steward relationships with existing corporate and foundation partners, securing and coordinating pertinent information and meetings, and develop effective relationships with new supporters
• Stay closely attuned to the Massachusetts philanthropic community in order to identify and capitalize on all funding opportunities that might support new and existing programs

Qualifications:

• At least 3 years of fundraising experience, with demonstrated success in grant writing
• Experience building relationships with foundation donors, with a commitment to improving the quality, content and format of MassINC grants and reports
• Superior written and oral communication skills and attention to detail, with a highly organized work style and high professional standards
• Connections to or familiarity with the Massachusetts philanthropic community
• Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to interact effectively with a diverse group of staff and stakeholders
• Commitment to and passion for the mission of MassINC
• Results-oriented and driven with a strategic approach to fundraising and problem-solving
• A professional and resourceful style with the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative and manage multiple deadline-driven tasks and projects at a time
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required
