Founded in 2004, Root Cause is a nonprofit organization that accelerates enduring solutions to social and economic problems by supporting social innovators and educating social impact investors. We do this through business planning and implementation, leadership development, research and publications, and the creation of professional and funding networks that unite the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.  Over the last four years, Root Cause has grown to over 35 full-time, part-time, and contract staff and has an annual budget of $3 million operating six business units.

Position:

Root Cause is seeking a dynamic and entrepreneurial Development Manager who will have primary responsibility for overseeing the strategic development, coordination and implementation of Root Cause’s fundraising initiatives.  A new position created due to organizational growth, the Development Manager will build on the significant fundraising success of the organization to date.  In the first year, the Development Manager will have three primary areas of responsibility: developing and implementing a fundraising strategy to capitalize an organizational business plan, coordinating all funding solicitations on behalf of the organization, and building systems and processes to ensure that Root Cause effectively pursues, tracks, and evaluates all funding opportunities.  Moving forward, the Development Manager will explore and cultivate all funding opportunities, including individual, corporate, foundation and government, to ensure the continued success and growth of Root Cause’s dynamic programs.  Responsibilities include developing and cultivating new and existing funder relationships, proposal writing, grant reporting, oversight of timely, high-quality communication with all funders and establishing systems necessary to support growth in the organization’s fundraising capacity. 

Responsibilities:

• Maintain and grow an active portfolio of individual, corporate, foundation and government donors through the research, cultivation, and stewardship phases; coordinate and participate in funder meetings with the President and CEO as appropriate
• Lead the creation of a strategic development plan to cultivate and grow the current funding relationships and initiate new relationships
• Create and implement all appropriate systems and metrics to increase operational efficiencies within the development function including the development of evaluation tools
• Oversee the preparation of high-quality grant proposals, reports, donor correspondence, mailings, and acknowledgements required to support ongoing fundraising activities
• Design and execute innovative and strategic corporate and foundation partnership concepts
• Provide regular reports on progress against annual goals and quarterly benchmarks to senior leaders and the Board of Directors

Qualifications:

• Several years of experience in development and fundraising with increasing responsibility and proven success raising money, building relationships, and increasing organizational visibility
• Energetic, enthusiastic, team-player interested in growing within an entrepreneurial environment; background in and/or passion for social entrepreneurship preferred
• Demonstrated success developing and maintaining innovative partnerships
• Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills, including exceptional writing skills, strong oral presentation and relationship management skills
• The ability to effectively gain the respect and support of various constituencies, including board and staff members, donors, and foundation and corporate leaders
• Flexible and adaptable, with a focus on innovation and creativity
• A goal-oriented work style, with a willingness to bring new ideas to the table, take risks, and learn in an ambiguous and intellectually challenging environment
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience; Master’s degree preferred
