Founded in 2004, Root Cause is a nonprofit organization that accelerates enduring solutions to social and economic problems by supporting social innovators and educating social impact investors. We do this through business planning and implementation, leadership development, research and publications, and the creation of professional and funding networks that unite the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.  Over the last four years, Root Cause has grown to over 35 full-time, part-time, and contract staff and has an annual budget of $3 million operating six business units.

Position:

Root Cause is seeking a dynamic and experienced Director of Marketing to develop and execute a multifaceted strategic marketing and communications plan that will build a unified brand, continue to improve the overall current brand strategy, and enhance the visibility and reputation of Root Cause nationally and internationally.  Vital to the position is the ability to establish and sustain relationships with a range of individuals and institutions including small nonprofit leaders, CEO’s of public foundations, and leaders at the city, state, and federal levels of government.  Reporting to the Founder and CEO and working collaboratively across multiple business units, the Director of Marketing will oversee all branding initiatives, the development of appropriate and compelling collateral materials that demonstrate Root Cause’s thought leadership in the field, all internal and external knowledge sharing initiatives, strategic direction of its websites and the execution of effective public relations campaigns working often with outside professional firms. This position is an exciting opportunity for a marketing professional to contribute to the strategic direction of a growing organization, build their own team and have a tremendous impact on the fast changing social sector and specifically social entrepreneurship throughout the country and the world.  In a fast growing but still young organization, this position combines strategy making/development and real execution. Over time it is expected to increase in managerial responsibility as others are brought into the organization.

Responsibilities:

Specific responsibilities for the Director of Marketing include but are not limited to:

• Develop a multifaceted marketing strategy to convey key organizational themes of business discipline, an entrepreneurial, goal-oriented approach to solving social problems, and continuous learning to national and international audiences in the public, private, and nonprofit sectors.
• Oversee all marketing, branding, communications and public relations activities for Root Cause nationally, including developing and implementing systems and structures to drive marketing projects forward
• Develop and manage an annual marketing and communications budget, ensuring the most effective use of limited resources
• Oversee all aspects of development, design, production, and distribution of Root Cause’s publications, ensuring consistency with brand
• Support the organization’s status as a thought leader by coordinating all media relations, identifying appropriate opportunities for presentations and speaking engagements, and leading the development of the knowledge sharing program
• Institute effective internal communications systems, such as internal newsletters, intranet, and regular meetings
• Build, lead and motivate employees supporting the marketing agenda to ensure high performance
• Establish and maintain effective relationships with all vendors associated with marketing, communications, and PR activities, including virtual webmaster, copywriters, graphic designers, photographers, media consultants, and others
• Monitor and measure the relevant and competitive landscape

Qualifications:

Strong candidates for this position will have:

• 5+ years of relevant experience in a fast-growing nonprofit or for-profit environment
• Commitment to and passion for the mission of Root Cause; knowledge of the field of social entrepreneurship and social innovation a plus
• Demonstrated success in an entrepreneurial environment, with the ability to think strategically while executing tactically with limited resources
• Significant brand development and management experience within a digital context combined with an ability to identify effective and visually strong aesthetics
• Significant experience managing the development and production of print and online publications
• Demonstrated success with media relations
• Experience using Web-based (web 2.0) tools
• Strong management skills, with the ability to mentor, coach, and supervise marketing and communications professionals and manage effectively manage external vendors
• A goal-oriented work style, with a willingness to bring new ideas to the table, take risks, and learn in an ambiguous and intellectually challenging environment
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required; Master’s degree preferred
