Since 1999, Public Allies New York has led a powerful model for identifying, training and supporting talented and diverse young adults to lead positive community change. Through our signature AmeriCorps program, young people, ages 18 to 30, serve in full-time apprenticeships creating, improving and expanding services at local nonprofit organizations, and participate in a rigorous leadership development program that combines training, coaching, team projects and reflection. We extend the impact of our program by supporting an active, growing alumni network, and investing through our alumni programs in those positioned to make the greatest difference. Since its establishment, Public Allies New York has graduated 170 dynamic leaders who are passionately leading social change.

Position:

The Executive Director is the leader and administrator of the Public Allies New York site. Reporting directly to the Vice President of Ally Programs, the Executive Director will be responsible for managing the operational, financial and programmatic functions of Public Allies New York, including overall site leadership, fundraising and financial management, and stakeholder development.  Externally, the Executive Director will be the ambassador for Public Allies New York, focused on developing robust partner and funding relationships across the region.  Internally, the Executive Director will build capacity and infrastructure to support effective programming, staff management, and operational and financial management, creating a successful, sustainable organization with strong roots in the community. 

Responsibilities:

The responsibilities of the Executive Director include but are not limited to:

Site Leadership
• Serve as leader, coach and mentor for staff and provide ongoing opportunities for staff development Set clear goals and expectations for staff and provide timely and helpful feedback on progress toward meeting those goals and expectations
• Create and support innovations and partnerships that improve program quality, expand program impact, and encourage program growth and sustainability
• Serve as an active ambassador in the community and engage stakeholders productively to raise awareness and support organizational success and sustainability
• Engage, grow and manage an active local advisory board that champions the program in the community, raises money, supports affiliation, and advises program strategy and achievement
• Develop and implement effective communications strategies to attract and maintain support and communicate our impact
• Supports efforts to eventually affiliate the site
• Develops internal capacity, infrastructure, systems and procedures for planning, managing, tracking and achieving goals and outcomes
• Participate and play a leadership role in Public Allies national planning and coordinating activities with other local offices

Fundraising and Fiscal Management
• Lead all site fundraising efforts to garner the necessary resources to operate effectively and the relationships necessary to be financially sustainable
• Manage all of Public Allies New York’s donor relationships, including federal, foundation, individual and corporate grants by meeting reporting requirements and other grant compliance responsibilities
• Identify in-kind support that reduces program and operating costs and increases organizational and program effectiveness
• Manage and oversee local finances in full compliance with Public Allies fiscal management policies and procedures

Stakeholder Development
• Work with staff, alumni and stakeholders to engage community resources, ensuring wide stakeholder involvement in the identification of potential partners
• Lead organization in determining collaborative potential and cultural fit between Public Allies and potential partners
• Support contract negotiations to ensure effective partnerships, including communication of clear expectations around all operational, financial and programmatic functions

Qualifications:

• 5+ years of professional experience in nonprofit leadership and management with a track record of high quality performance in an entrepreneurial environment
• Strong strategic thinking skills; Has an ability to co-create a vision and enroll staff & stakeholders in that vision
• Demonstrated success in identifying, building & managing key stakeholder relationships within the Chicago community that increase organizational visibility, partnership opportunities, and funding sources
• Strong staff management experience, including the ability to motivate and coach staff to achieve results
• Strong team-building and collaborative leadership skills
• Demonstrated experience as an entrepreneurial thinker and product developer; Ability to identify key opportunities and challenges and the agility to respond accordingly
• Strong mental agility; is able to manage complexity, weather ambiguity, and champion change
• Strong critical thinking skills combined with a sound understanding of strategic and/or business planning
• Passion for and demonstrated commitment to addressing issues of social justice and a belief in young people’s ability to lead
• Strong written and verbal communication skills and demonstrated ability to work with flexibility, efficiency and diplomacy with diverse constituent groups
• A commitment to diversity and a healthy sense of humor preferred
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred
