Overview:

The Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP) works with funders to help them more effectively address society’s most pressing needs.  Specifically, CEP provides data and creates insight, so philanthropic funders can better define, assess, and improve their effectiveness and impact.  Since receiving initial funding in 2001, CEP has produced widely referenced research reports on foundation performance assessment, governance, and funder-grantee relationships.  CEP has created new data sets relevant to foundation leaders and hosted highly regarded programming focused on key issues related to foundation effectiveness.  CEP has also developed new, widely used assessment tools.  More than 150 funders have used CEP’s assessment tools – and have implemented significant changes on the basis of what they have learned. CEP works primarily with the largest five hundred foundations in the country, including the Gates, Rockefeller, Hewlett, and MacArthur Foundations among others. CEP is a nonprofit organization based in Cambridge, MA.

Position:

The Manager, Client Relations is an exciting and critical role that has been created due to organizational growth. It encompasses a broad set of responsibilities requiring analytical skills, client relationship experience and project management capabilities.  Using CEP’s assessment tools and research, this person will develop and lead client relationships with some of the country’s largest foundations using and will oversee execution of CEP’s data analysis, data generation and assessment tool creation efforts by leading cross-functional project teams. This person will report the Vice President, Assessment Tools and will directly manage Research Analysts.

Responsibilities:

• Effectively utilize CEP tools and frameworks to create insight about funder performance and empathetically communicate results to senior leaders of foundation clients
• Cultivate, build, and manage strong client relationships based on trust, communication and a commitment to service excellence
• Oversee the production of high quality assessment tools by managing data collection and analysis as well as compiling data into professional and effective documents and presentations for clients
• Manage research analysts through coaching, mentoring and training to ensure that CEP’s tools reach the necessary level of value and rigor for foundations
• Attend conferences and generate interest in CEP’s work through public speaking and generating a word-of-mouth buzz about the accomplishments and goals of CEP
• Contribute to new business development by following up on inquiries and leads as well as exploring new business opportunities with existing clients
• Contribute positively to the organization’s culture by demonstrating a commitment to defining, assessing and improving foundation performance

Qualifications:

• Minimum of two years of experience in management/strategy consulting
• Experience developing and managing client relationships with responsibility for deliverables and presentations
• Experience managing cross-function teams as well as mentoring and training junior staff members
• Outstanding analytical ability, including comfort with basic statistical analyses; advanced Microsoft Excel and Power Point skills preferred
• Excellent writing and communication skills
• Detail-oriented and organized, with the ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously
• Passionate commitment to the work of the nonprofit sector and the effectiveness of foundation philanthropy
• Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree in business, public policy or public administration strongly preferred
• Travel up to 30% will be required
