Overview:

DC Prep Public Charter School is changing public education in Washington, D.C. With a program of rigorous academics and character education, we prepare students for success in college-preparatory high schools. DC Prep was founded in 2003 by a diverse and dedicated group of Washingtonians committed to dramatically improving public education. The goal was to create one excellent public charter school and use it as a model to expand into a system of high quality schools throughout the city. Over the next decade, DC Prep will expand to ten schools and bring a high-quality education to thousands of PreSchool, elementary, and middle school children in Washington’s historically under-served neighborhoods. At full-scale, DC Prep will enroll 10% of public school students in Wards 5-8.

Now in its fifth year, DC Prep has built an outstanding middle school program and demonstrated uncommon success in student achievement, parent satisfaction, and organizational development. DC Prep’s second campus – an elementary school serving PreSchool through 3rd graders – opened in September 2007. By demonstrating academic and organizational excellence at scale, DC Prep aims to be a positive, energizing force for urban education reform in Washington, D.C.

Position:

A hands-on strategist, DC Prep’s first Director of Accounting and Finance will partner with the Chief Operating Officer to develop and implement strategies and systems for effective and responsible financial management and sophisticated analysis.  The Director of Accounting and Finance will oversee full cycle accounting services for DC Prep’s two campuses and will play a prominent role in influencing organizational strategy, planning and growth with respect to the utilization of financial resources. This is a position with high growth potential that requires strong accounting, financial management and analytical skills as well as exceptional interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with educators, administrative staff and vendors.  The Director of Accounting and Finance will report directly to the Chief Operating Officer. 

Responsibilities:

In all areas, the Director of Accounting and Finance will be expected to bring an entrepreneurial approach to developing and integrating accounting systems and processes into a growing and dynamic organization.  Specifically, the Director of Accounting and Finance will:
• Manage and implement all accounting services including processing A/R, A/P, payroll, G/L account reconciliations and month/quarter end adjustments
• Work closely with operations managers at each school campus to manage procurement , set internal financial processes and controls, and recommend cost containment measures
• Work closely with senior management team and school principals in the development of annual budgets
• Develop and enhance systems and tools to facilitate the effective management of resources, including maintaining an accounting system to track departments, funds and location attributes
• Prepare monthly and quarterly financial statements, as well as periodic financial reports or federal and private sector grants
• Improve existing reporting and analysis capabilities to support decision making, improve performance, and drive business growth
• Manage all vendor data and serve as liaison for annual external audits

Qualifications:

• Passion for education and commitment to DC Prep’s mission
• A minimum of 5 years of accounting and financial management experience in a corporate or non-profit environment, with demonstrated success building systems and tools to support growth
• Experience with GAAP, GAAS, and non-profit financial accounting preferred
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with the ability to engage and work closely with a wide range of staff members
• Strong organizational skills, with outstanding attention to detail
• Track record of creating and implementing innovative solutions to meet organizational needs; ability to bring creativity and collaboration to the process of developing financial systems and process
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office and financial management software required
• Commitment to the mission and values of DC Prep including humility, integrity and a focus on results
• Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, finance or business required; CPA preferred
